In the age of mass production, it has become increasingly harder to separate the organic desire from the manufactured. The art from the entertainment, the need from the want, the conscious creation from the blind rage.
The term ‘Manufactured Uncertainty’ first reached public print in the work of Ulrich Beck titled ‘World Risk Society’. Beck argued that from the 60’s onwards we transitioned from an industrial to a ‘risk society’; where due to rapid development we have set in motion a ricochet of effects and consequences which we can’t foresee or keep up with. Yet in a world where we're a rush to define and 'understand' everything, it seems that we struggle ever harder to find certainty in the chaos.
It is this pressure, and also this uncertainty; to name and to frame, which we came up against when we decided to create this collection. Indeed it is to this uncertainty that we decided to dedicate the exhibition; as we gradually realised that in our simple act of collecting we had already created - manufactured - a particularly modern kind of disturbance: uncertainty.
Therefore, as an oasis in the incessant chorus of naming and meaning making, we offer you a moment of silent discord: a chance to observe and enjoy, without having to leave any the wiser.
In this collection of still photographs and paintings we offer to you a collage of moments; pieces of personal satisfaction about which our words fell flat. Instead of weaving together a meaning for these pieces, we challenged ourselves to listen to what we had created. Watching and following the colours and contours of our works, we found moments of harmony and beauty scattered across otherwise disparate works of art.
